will we ever be done
comparing
slicing pieces
from
the human loaf
turning the knives
of judgment
upon ourselves

perhaps it is because
we must somehow
discover who we are
unique and differentiated
from the rest

but this tool
of discernment
becomes linked
with our animal brains
programmed, as they are
for status
hierarchy
and control

and thus do we evaluate
am I good
am I better
am I best
where is it that I fit
in the ever moving world
of contrasts
and competition

I know by now
this game cannot be won
and I no longer wish
to cut anyone
from my heart
I simply want to pull you in
honor your beauty
and difference
and love this also
in myself
